How to take on the dare

1. Pick a texture — start with something you can find at home or a ten-minute walk from your door. A wooden table, a brick wall, a fence, a piece of fabric, a kitchen sponge.

2. Get close — use your lens's closest focusing distance, or switch your phone to macro / "0.5x" and lean in. Fill the frame with the surface.

3. Chase the light — side-lighting shows texture best. Shoot near a window, or outdoors in the low angle of early morning or late afternoon. Raking light makes grooves and ridges pop.

4. Watch the background — you want texture from edge to edge, so keep your depth of field shallow and your lens low or parallel to the surface.

5. Shoot more than one — textures reward experimentation. Nail a version in flat light and another in dramatic side-light. Compare.
