The Self-Portrait Photo Dare: Put Yourself in the Frame
Here's the dare most photographers keep avoiding: put yourself in the frame. We're obsessed with shooting everything except the one person who can't hide — us. This dare is here to fix that.
The rules:
- You must be in every shot. A genuine self-portrait — you behind (or at) the lens, in the picture.
- No peeking. Rely on the timer, a remote, or the mirror, not the screen.
- Minimum three self-portraits. Try three very different moods, lights or poses.
Autofocus is easy. Owning your own face on purpose? Now that's a challenge.
Self-portraits are the hardest thing to learn because they strip the distance away. There's no "subject" to hide behind — just you and how you want to be seen. That pressure, weirdly, is what makes the photos so good.
Ways to run it:
- Natural-light mode: one window, one hour, no artificial light. Watch how the light changes your mood.
- Introvert mode: your back, a shadow, hands, a reflection — you're present without a full face on camera.
- Wide-open mode: full face, direct eye contact, no posing. Just you looking back at yourself.
A mirror selfie is a starting point, not the finish line. Use a timer, set the mood, pick an outfit that says something — and shoot yourself like you'd shoot anyone else. Post your best under #DarePicz. Take the dare — you've earned your own photo. 📸
