The Reflection Photo Dare: Mirror the World Back

Some of the most striking photographs you'll ever see aren't of a subject at all — they're of a subject mirrored. A puddle holding a sky, a window folding a street into double, a polished surface bending light back at you. This dare is about the reflection — and it will train your eye to see the world twice.

The Reflection Photo Dare: find a reflective surface and make the reflection the star of a single frame. Don't just photograph a puddle — photograph what the puddle is showing you.

The rules (keep it honest):

• One frame. Choose the moment, commit, and don't reshoot. Part of the skill is reading the light and waiting.
• The reflection is the subject. If the shot is "a building with a little water at the base," it doesn't count. The mirrored world should be what draws the eye.
• Any reflective surface. Water, glass, mirrors, car surfaces, wet pavement, a metal door, a phone screen, even a spoon. If it bounces light, it's fair game.
• Keep it G-rated. Reflections are gorgeous — no need to make them anything else.

Prompts to prime the shutter:

1. A puddle holding a full tree, a building, or an empty sky — get low, close to the surface.

2. A storefront window folding the opposite street into itself.

3. A still lake or pond turning the whole scene upside down.

4. A car bonnet or a rain-flecked hood catching the world in miniature.

5. A mirror self-portrait — but make you the secondary, the reflection primary.

6. Wet pavement after rain, lights smearing across the ground.

7. A polished escalator, elevator door, or rail bending shapes into ribbons.

8. A glass building reflecting another glass building — pattern within pattern.

9. A splash or a ripple breaking the reflection into fragments.

10. A person standing just out of frame, reflected whole.

A reflection doesn't just show you the world — it shows you how to look at it differently.
